When Josh was a small child and did something bad, his excuse was "the spider in my head" told him to do so. Thinking back on it as an adult, he thought it would be fun to incorporate the same excuse with adult issues. Doing things we know we shouldn't but do them anyway, because the spider tells us so. Or something like that..
lyrics
There is a spider in my head / He tells me what to do instead.
To block him out, I do my best / But whats a boy to do I guess.
He makes me drink those nasty drinks / And smoke those cigarettes
He makes me say those mean, mean words / The ones I know I will regret
